Fire Prevention Week

South Milwaukee firefighters visit each K4 to K5 kindergarten and 1st grade class to share fire safety messages in October, in observance of the National Fire Prevention Week. These young students are introduced to the faces and the fundamentals of our career. The essentials of fire safety, including "911", "Stop-Drop-Roll" and "all about smoke alarms" are shared as well. "Smoke Alarm Surveys" are assigned as homework to ensure family awareness.

Fire Safety Program

South Milwaukee firefighters meet with all 5th-grade classes to present our Fire Safety program. Both classroom discussions and hands-on demonstrations enhance the learning experiences. There are multiple sessions to cover various fire and home safety topics including:

  • "911" and communication
  • Fire behavior and dangers of home fires
  • Fire extinguishers and burn safety
  • Fire service history
  • Home Fire Escape Plans
  • Home hazards and fire prevention
  • Various equipment and "tools of the trade"

Students are assigned 2 projects; a "Media" assignment and "Home Fire Escape Plan". These projects require family participation in hopes of raising fire safety at home.

Career Interest

South Milwaukee firefighters promote the SMFD to middle school students during Career Interest Day. Our presentation and classroom discussion introduce the students to the fire service career. The session provides an inside look at the requirements, workplace environment and culture of the South Milwaukee Fire Department.

Children can challenge themselves by handling a real fire hose, nozzle and flowing water on our "flame house" prop. Children love to spray some "big water" on these hot August evenings. The fire department provides supervision during the evening fireworks display as well.

Fire Safety Days

Small Kid with a Water HoseOur annual September event hosted by McDonald's and South Milwaukee Fire/Police Departments feature an afternoon of family fun and safety at the South Milwaukee McDonald's restaurant. The fire and police department displays offer a close-up view of our vehicles and equipment while various games and activities allow children to learn vital fire safety lessons during the event. Families can also tour our mobile Survive Alive House at the event to learn the important steps of safe home egress during a fire situation. Ronald McDonald's live show highlights the afternoon with laughter and lessons of fire and home safety. Children receive prizes for their knowledge and participation during the show.

Delivering Fire Prevention

We have teamed up with Children's Hospital/Wisconsin Safe Kids Coalition and South Milwaukee Pizza Hut in October to promote fire safety and pizza!!! A fire engine crew and event volunteers follow restaurant deliveries to promote smoke alarm awareness for select households. Families enjoy free pizza if our firefighters find working smoke alarms in the home!!! Families are also provided additional fire safety information during the visit.
