Citizens Academy

Citizens Academy MembersThe work of police professionals is multifaceted and can be misunderstood by some in the community. Therefore, the South Milwaukee Police Department seeks to educate members of our community on the complicated nature of policing through a "Citizens Academy." This course is designed to raise awareness of the various issues confronting law enforcement officers each day and gives the attendees a better understanding of the instruction our officers go through in order to protect and serve this community. Through our shortened version of academy lessons, citizens are exposed to the training concepts used in all police academies as they learn about of the duties, responsibilities and procedures used by our officers.

The Citizens Academy meets once each week for 8 to 10 weeks and each lesson is about 3 hours long (6:30 pm to 9:30 pm). The instructors, who are members of the South Milwaukee Police Department, provide instruction on a variety of topics and are open to any questions you may have. In addition to the classroom sessions, participants have an opportunity to observe dispatch operations and ride with an officer on patrol.
